Hon. Mrs Ukel Oyaghiri

Barr. Mrs. Ukel Oyaghiri is from Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State. She attended Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Port Harcourt where she obtained her West African school Certificate in 1984, thereafter she attended the prestigious University of Port Harcourt where she obtained a (B.A ED. Hons.) in 1989.

Consequent upon her quest, she proceeded to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and the prestigious Nigerian Law School where she obtained LL.B and B.L in 2003 and 2003 respectively.

Vision

The Vision of the Ministry is to build a society of gender discrimination that guarantees equal access to wealth creation opportunities, develop a culture that places premium on protection of the Girl Child And focuses attention to both the Public and Private Sector on Issues that Promotes full Participations of Women in the development process.

Mission

The Mission Statement of the Ministry is to serve as the Vehicle to Bring about a Speedy and Healthy Development of Rivers Women and Girls in the Mainstream of Our Developmental Process.

Brief History

In time past, the call for improvement of the status of women gained global attention due to perceived deterioration and neglect of the womenfolk. The United Nations responded and called for the establishment of an institutional mechanism by member nations to address any perceived gender imbalance inherent in their immediate locality.

This, in Nigeria, gave birth to the National Commission for Women in 1989 with its upgrading in 1997 to a full-fledged Ministry. In Rivers State, the Government established the State Commission for Women in 1991 which was eventually upgraded to a full-fledged Ministry in 1997.

Objectives

To formulate policies that promotes gender equality and empowering women and girls in Rivers State.
To formulate programmes that will develop the potentials of women and girls to contribute maximally towards the development of the State.
To identify problems militating against women and girls and to design and execute programmes and projects to address them.
To collaborate with government agencies to address societal issues that militates against the advancement of women. E.g. trafficking in women and girls, violence against women, Widowhood practices and Female genital mutilation, maternal mortality, etc.
To provide career guidance and counseling as a means of empowering the female gender.
To provide mass literacy involving informal and functional literacy to foster female educational empowerment and social integration of women.
